Happy Internet Geek Tuesday!

This week, I am celebrating “Get Real On the Internet Week” created by Real Simple magazine. I am using this week and several articles from Real Simple‘s January issue to explore how I am going to express my Flowista spirit by incorporating more digital wellness moments into my life this year. The first article I read, “Finding Balance in A Wired World,” asked me if I was addicted to my digital devices.  I was close to saying YES because the month of December was super busy due to Digital Sisterhood Month and then I reminded myself that I did slow down at the end of the month. I used two yoga workshops to slow down and recharge. They helped me settle into reflection mode where I was able to enter a period of stillness that opened the door to some juicy journaling sessions. Looking back, I can honestly say I was close to being addicted to my digital devices. Now that’s not something I want to get close to in 2014.

Today, I pulled out a Flowista collage I made while writing my book, Digital Sisterhood: A Memoir of Fierce Living Online. Flowista is a Digital Sisterhood Leadership Archetype I identified and have used to remind myself to unplug from my digital devices and online activities.

This year Digital Sisterhood Network (DSN) is hosting the third annual celebration of Digital Sisterhood Month from December 1 to December 31, 2012. “Creativity + Great Health =  Fierce Living Women” is the theme. Online events featuring the announcement of the Digital Sisters of the Year, Digital Sisterhood Leader profiles, giveaways, guest blog posts, Digital Sisterhood Radio interviews, and Twitter chats will be held.   • Event Description: Come celebrate Digital Sisterhood Month on December 2, 2012, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m with a “Fierce Living in Fashion” event that takes you on a “15 Minute Flash Mob” tour of U Street’s amazing boutiques and vintage shops located between 15th and 16th Streets, NW, Washington, D.C. All you need are $15 or more and comfortable walking shoes. The tour will be led by Brea Ellis, a fourth generation Washingtonian and the founder of What I Wore: tip to toe, a personal style blog. Remembering Digital Sister Susan Niebur, One of My #DSFierceLiving Sheros

This morning I dedicated my yoga practice to Susan Niebur, an amazing digital sister and #dsfierceliving shero who inspires me tremendously.  After yoga, I wrote in my journal and discovered I was writing the dedication page for my book, Digital Sisterhood.  Susan’s name appeared.  Here’s why.

I heard Susan share her breast cancer journey at BlogHer in New York City in August 2010.  Click here to watch a video of her talk.  Her words moved my spirit.  They made me think of my two grandmothers who lived with breast cancer.  When I returned home from BlogHer, I started following her blog, Toddler Planet and became inspired by her fierce living spirit, heart, and courage.  She quickly became one of my digital sister sheros.

In January 2011, I met her in person at the Be Blogalicious movie event in Silver Spring, Maryland (photo above was taken of Susan at the event).  That was a game changing moment because I had a chance to tell her how much I was inspired by her BlogHer talk and blog.

In October 2011, I listened to Susan share her journey at the Blogalicious Conference held at the National Harbor in Maryland. Later in the day, I was able to hug her and say how much I appreciated her story and work.  Susan made her transition on February 6.  Her hug is now a priceless gift I will always treasure.

Through Susan’s blog, I was able to witness the power of how one woman used social media to document and share her health journey, build community with like-minded people, give and receive support, and promote breast cancer awareness.  She caused me to look for other women who were doing similar things with social media.  I found plenty.  These women along with Susan inspired me to dedicate Digital Sisterhood Month 2011 to women’s health.

I am so grateful for the presence of Susan in my social media life.  Her fierce spirit, heart, and courage will always be remembered. Today I am sending love and light to her husband, sons, family, and friends.  She will be deeply missed.

Happy New Year! My Heart Belongs to Haiti This Month!

Happy New Year All!

It’s been a few weeks since I last posted.  Why? Digital Sisterhood Month!  31 days of celebrating women online and the connections they make, conversations they have, communities they build, causes they support, collaborative partnerships they establish, and commerce they engage in with women they meet online and offline. This month my heart belongs to Haiti because I want to honor the resiliency of the Haitian people who experienced a devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010.  Last year I taught an online yoga class for Yoga Day USA that was dedicated to the people of Haiti. At the beginning of the class, I asked viewers to donate money to Doctors Without Borders to support their work in Haiti. Click here to watch the video.

This year I am serving as an ambassador for the Heart of Haiti campaign, a Macy’s partnership that was created to provide sustainable income to Haitian artisans impacted by the January earthquake.  Read my November 29th post to learn more. I almost forgot to mention that I organized a Digital Sisterhood Month field trip for DC area  women in social media to visit the National Museum of Women in the Arts on December 3 to see the “Lois Mailou Jones: A Life in Vibrant Color” exhibit.  During her lifetime, Dr. Jones (born November 3, 1905 – died June 9, 1998), a Howard University art professor (one of my favorite artists), created a body of artwork that was inspired by Haiti and her marriage to Haitian artist Louis Vergniaud Pierre-Noel.  One of my greatest treats was showing the women who attended the museum field trip some of my favorite Haitian-inspired paintings created by Dr. Jones.  Check out the amazing “Water Carriers” painting on the left side of the blog post.

Ananda’s Digital Sisterhood Month Adventures @ DC TED Women on 12.7.10

The first week of Digital Sisterhood Month 2010 ended with me attending a local DC TED Women event – on December 7, 2010. The event was co-sponsored by Melanie Spring, Amy Liz Martin, and Nicolette Pizzitola at Nicolette’s offices. These three women brought together a group of approximately 13 digital sisters and one digital brother to watch the TED Women’s webcast which featured a group of dynamic women a and men speakers who gave short talks about how women and girls are reshaping the world. It was an amazing afternoon and evening. It was just the kind of Digital Sisterhood Month outing I needed to keep myself moving through December!

Ananda’s Digital Sisterhood Month Adventures at Fabulous Women Business Owners’ December Meeting

Digital Sisterhood Month Week #2 started with a bang. I taught an online kind and gentle office yoga class that you should check out if you have 18 minutes and a need for some OM energy in your day. Click on the link to watch the video: http://stickam.com/anandaleeke.

I also launched the weekly Digital Sisterhood Wednesday celebration and hosted the Tweetchat about women’s most popular Twitter conversations. Both Twitter events inspired me and really helped me reach into my heart to give thanks for the beauty and power of women sharing online.

The highlight of my offline day was attending the DC Fabulous Women Business Owners holiday party and mentoring meeting that was hosted by Christina Bailey, co-founder of Tindale Real Estate, at Hounshell Real Estate offices. Kathy Korman Frey, Chief Hot Momma and founder of the Hot Mommas Project, was the keynote speaker. Kathy talked about the power of mentoring in women and girls’ lives. For more information, visit www.hotmommasproject.org.  Sarah Massey, founder of the Fabulous Women Business Owners group  and Massey Media, jumpstarted the evening with a mentoring sharing circle that allowed women to share their business, mentoring expertise, and mentee needs. It’s time to celebrate the First Annual Digital Sisterhood Month in December 2010! Visit http://digitalsisterhood.wordpress.com.

Digital sisterhood is the feminine currency women use to create relationship wealth through the connections they make, conversations they have, communities they build, causes they support, collaborative partnerships they establish, and commerce they engage in with women they meet online and offline.

I created Digital Sisterhood Month to give women an opportunity to celebrate their connections, conversations, communities, collaborative partnerships, and commerce.

Digital Sisterhood Month Events

1. December 1

#DigitalSisterhood Wednesday Twitter Celebration: Tweet about digital sisters, organizations, and causes like the Red Pump Project that promote HIV/AIDS awareness.

7:00-7:15 am EST – Digital Sisterhood Online Yoga

9:00-10:00 pm EST – #DigitalSisterhood Tweetchat: Discussion topic is how did you use the power of your online voice to raise awareness in 2010.

2. December 2

8:00-9:00 pm EST –  Digital Sisterhood Radio: Sisterhood Collaborators Success Coach Dr. Nicole Cutts and Certified Financial Planner Marie Isabel Laurion on Taking Your Dreams from Design to Destiny: The Next Level

3. December 4 (offline in DC)

2:00-3:45 pm – Field Trip to Yin Yang Yoga Class @ Tranquil Space, 1632 17th Street, NW, Washington, DC ( several blocks from Dupont Circle Metro)

Please bring your own yoga mat and register for the class online by paying $18 (drop in class fee) several days in advance.  Click here to register.  If you wait until December 4 to register online  or at the studio, the class may be filled.  The studio IS NOT offering any special discounts to Digital Sisterhood field trip participants.

Meet Ananda Leeke in the the studio’s tea lounge after class for a cup of tea. If people want to hang out after the yoga class, then the group can pick a place like Sweet Green or another local cafe for a impromptu afternoon meet up.

4. December 5 (offline in DC)

3:30-4:30  pm – Museum Meet Up Visit to Lois Mailou Jones: A Life in Vibrant Color exhibit @ National Museum of Women in the Arts,  1250 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20005-3970 

Directions: Metro Center is the closest metro stop. Parking is limited and a bit challenging. Please meet Ananda Leeke and the group at the museum information desk by 3:30 pm.  The event is FREE because it is held on the first Sunday of month. The group will walk to Teaism for dinner (10 minute walk)

5:00-6:30 pm – Dinner Meet Up @ Teaism, a woman-owned Asian-inspired tea cafe, 400 8th Street, NW, Washington, DC

Directions: Everyone is responsible for their own dinner.  The group will eat together on the lower level.  Seating is available on a first come, first serve basis.

5. December 7
