Mindful Technology: Digital Wellness & Tech-Life Balance

Over the years, technology has become the BFF of people, communities, organzations, and businesses that have digital access, can afford it, and know how to use it.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, they increased their reliance on and use of technology in their life, relationships, education, employment, healthcare, spiritual communities, and businesses.

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you have landed in the right place!

My Digital Communications Career Journey

AnandaLeekeatBBSJ17Conference

My love affair with digital communications was born during my tenure at the Hamilton Securities Group, Inc. during the 1990s. While at Hamilton, I spearheaded the design and implementation of the firm’s intellectual property protection and contracts administration programs for Internet products and services. My expertise in these areas allowed me to serve as a team member on community venture capital transactions in underserved communities. I also built, maintained, and conducted team trainings on intellectual property, Internet promotions, and privacy.

My Hamilton experience launched my career as a business consultant who conducted trademark searches, prepared copyright registration and domain reservation applications, and provided legal disclaimer language for web sites, products, and services. It laid the foundation for my work as an online columnist for the women’s channel on NetNoir.com, a multimedia services company and website that focused on African American culture and lifestyle. I later tapped into my content creation skills to create blogs, podcasts, social media marketing strategies, and videos to market my art, books, coaching practice, and reiki and yoga services. As a result, I utilized these skills to launch and manage two tech inclusion initiatives: Digital Sisterhood Network (DSN), a women’s media channel and online community, and Digital Citizenship Project (DCP). My mindful technology memoir, Digital Sisterhood (available on Amazon) celebrates my digital life and work with the DSN and DCP.

In addition, I designed and managed the first-ever social media technical assistance and training program for over 25 affiliate agencies at the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI). After leaving USCRI, I worked as a digital communications consultant, volunteered at the Obama White House and was recognized as a social media thought leader (see below), launched the first-ever social media and workplace mindfulness programs as Digital Communications Director at  Law Students in Court (now Rising for Justice), and shared my social media expertise as a commentator on WHUR 96.3 FM. From 2019 to 2022, I served on the Nonprofit Technology Network’s Board of Directors.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, my relationship with social media and technology intensified. My screen time increased dramatically which caused digital distraction, information overload, and eye strain. My sleep routine was also impacted. In an effort to achieve tech-life balance and to strength my mindful technology skills, I completed the Digital Wellness Institute’s 10-week certification course.

Currently, I am using my training as a certified digital wellness educator to expand my Thriving Mindfully Academy and Resource Network, an online education platform. My wellness company, Ananda Leeke Consulting is a Tech Together DC partner. Tech Together DC is a values-led partnership between DC government, the nonprofit community, academia, and industry that works together to bridge the digital divide through access, training, and opportunity.

White House Recognition & Service

The Obama Administration recognized me as a social media thought leader. From 2014 to 2016, I worked with the White House to provide social media storytelling at national conferences and events including the State of the Union, Arrival Ceremony for French President Francois Hollande, Tumblr Q&A session on education and college affordability, Spring Garden Tour Social, Conference on Aging, InstaMeet, United State of Women Summit, and South by South Lawn. In 2015, I advised the White House Chief Digital Officer Jason Goldman on digital engagement strategies.
