Happy #InternetGeek Tuesday!
Today marks the return of #InternetGeek Tuesday to the blog and kicks off my five-week series on #InternetGeekat50 Lessons. Each Tuesday, I’ll be sharing one of the five key lessons I have learned since I stepped into the digital world and became an #InternetGeek when I logged onto LexisNexis as a first-year law student at Howard University School of Law almost 30 years ago (1986).
EXPANSION is #InternetGeekat50 Lesson 1. One thing I know for sure is that the Internet is all about EXPANSION. For me, it has expanded my mind through information sharing, creativity, community building efforts, learning opportunities, participation in social good causes and campaigns, reinvention as a digital communications professional, travel experiences, and volunteer activities. When I look back over the past three decades, I’m amazed at how far the Internet has taken me. It’s hard to believe I was once afraid of computers and resisted email until I was forced to use it daily in my work as Knowledge Manager for The Hamilton Securities Group, Inc. in 1996.
Since then, I’ve had numerous Internet EXPANSION moments. One of the most memorable ones happened two years ago when I discovered a coding learning opportunity with Rails Girls DC via Twitter. I applied for a scholarship to attend a one-day coding training and was accepted. It was a hard day of learning that was made easier by the support and encouragement of the Rails Girls DC trainers, my coach Greg Kenenitz (see picture above), and my fellow participants.
